As Facebook faces ongoing questions about the role that fake news played in the election — and criticism for not doing enough to crack down on it — the social giant on Thursday is unveiling some new steps it's taking to address hoaxes and fake news.Following up on a blog post that Mark Zuckerberg posted a few weeks ago, the company now says it's testing and starting to roll out some changes focused on "the worst of the worst, on the clear hoaxes spread by spammers for their own gain."Most notably, Facebook is engaging its biggest asset — not its algorithms, but its users — to get the 1.8 billion people who use the platform to identify and call out fake stories.

Facebook is going to start fact-checking, labeling, and burying fake news and hoaxes in its News Feed, the company said Thursday.The decision comes after Facebook received heated criticism for its role in spreading a deluge of political misinformation during the US presidential election, like one story that falsely said the Pope had endorsed Donald Trump.To combat fake news, Facebook has teamed up with a shortlist of media organizations, including Snopes and ABC News, that are part of an international fact-checking network led by Poynter, a nonprofit school for journalism in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Social Democratic Party (SPD) parliamentary chairman Thomas Oppermann singled out Facebook for particular criticism over the spread of fake news and hate messages.He called for tougher measures against the social media site."Facebook did not avail itself of the opportunity to regulate the issue of complaint management itself," Oppermann told "Der Spiegel" magazine in an interview published on Friday.
