First up, on Monday, Android Police reported that the company began testing out a new feature in the Facebook app. The killer app of WhatsApp Status, for the privacy-conscious at least, is the fact that all the status updates are end-to-end encrypted, intended to prevent man-in-the-middle attacks from successfully eavesdropping on your updates. Dubbed "direct photos and videos", the feature is built into the camera in Facebook, and allows users to send pictures and movies to their friends straight from the camera interface, like in Snapchat. But the bigger news came a few hours later, when Facebook messaging subsidiary WhatsApp announced a major new feature.

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) has found another way to mimic the most popular features of Snapchat (Pending:SNAP), but instead of inserting features into Instagram, it's adding them to another big-name app it owns: WhatsApp. The new Status feature will let users share photos or videos overlaid with drawings, emojis and a caption that will be visible for 24 hours, before disappearing.

WhatsApp becomes the fourth Facebook product to clone Snapchat stories. As on Snapchat, WhatsApp stories are posted from an in-app camera. It was followed by Facebook Messenger and then Facebook itself, both of which are still testing the feature in a small number of countries. Instead, Snapchat arrived and began swallowing up large chunks of the younger demographic, instilling an existential terror in Facebook that has transformed its product roadmap over the past year. Here's another gift from Facebook to Snapchat on the latter's road to an initial public offering: WhatsApp has cloned Snapchat's popular stories format and is using it to replace its old text-based status messages.
