"TechCrunch" : Facebook tests an enhanced local search and discovery feature offering business suggestions

as mentioned in Facebook is testing an enhanced local search feature that could see the social network creeping in on Google Maps, Foursquare and Yelp territory, TechCrunch learned and Facebook confirmed. The integration of "Nearby" suggestions in the search results seems more like an iteration on this earlier feature. In the meantime, Facebook's existing "Nearby" feature and this new local search addition pale compared with what Foursquare, Yelp or Google today offer consumers. Above: Facebook Nearby, circa 2012What's interesting is that, despite everything Facebook knows about its users, the suggestions were not ranked as well as they could be. Nor is it social data – for instance, a place visited by over a dozen friends was returned below one visited by just a few.

Facebook tests GIFs in comments like it's 1995

Facebook tests GIFs in comments like it's 1995
Facebook should begin testing comment GIFs next week with a small percentage of users. It will work similarly to the way GIFs work in Messenger right now, with some sort of search interface. Letting users comment on posts with this hot form of visual expression just shows how ubiquitous they have become. This isn't the first foray into animated GIFs for Facebook, of course — it's been possible to use them as posts since 2015. Heck, even Twitter has them, letting users of the short-text service express themselves in looping animations instead of just letters, numbers and emojis.

Facebook finally tests a GIF button for comments

And eventually, Facebook might loosen up and adda GIF button to the News Feed composer. Next week Facebook will begin testing a GIF button that lets users post GIFs from services like Giphy and Tenor as comments, a source told TechCrunch. It will work similarly to the GIF button in Facebook Messenger, allowing users to both browse trending GIFs and search for specific reactions in-line. Messenger added GIF sharing back in 2015, but the main Facebook app still didn't play nice with the format. Fellow content-browsing site Imgur has ridden GIF sharing to 150 million users, and BuzzFeed's GIF listicles have been some of the most popular links leading people away from Facebook.
