referring to ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will ask social media websites Facebook and Twitter to share information about the elements behind blasphemous content, said Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Thursday. Nisar claimed that several blogs containing blasphemous content has been removed and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has been directed to remove the content on rest of such pages. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday issued directives to relevant authorities to take all necessary measures to block blasphemous content on social media. The prime minister urged the Foreign Office to play its role in approaching international organisations to convince them also to block blasphemous content on social media. He called blasphemers enemies of humanity and said it has become an international issue, which Pakistan would raise at the international level representing the Muslim community.

Authorities in Pakistan have already identified 11 people suspected of blasphemy and would seek the extradition of anyone living abroad. Under Pakistani law anyone suspected of blasphemy can be prosecuted and potentially sentenced to death. Facebook said it reviews all government requests carefully, "with the goal of protecting the privacy and rights of our users. Twitter did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CNBC.

Under Pakistan's strict blasphemy laws, anyone found to have insulted Islam or the Prophet Muhammad can be sentenced to death. He said Pakistani authorities had identified 11 people for questioning over alleged blasphemy and would seek the extradition of anyone living abroad. Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said an official in Pakistan's Washington embassy had approached the two social media companies in an effort to identify Pakistanis, either within the country or abroad, who recently shared material deemed offensive to Islam.
