Messenger has doubled in two yearsThe news comes after Facebook said that Messenger hit 1 billion MAUs last July, which was just a few months after the 900 million milestone. Messenger added group payments just yesterday, expanding the service's ability for users to send money back and forth. When former PayPal executive David Marcus joined Facebook as Messenger chief in June 2014, Messenger had fewer than 300 million users. The Messenger app debuted in 2011 but didn't take off until 2014 when Facebook removed the messaging app from its main app. Facebook Messenger had 105.2 million active users in the U.S. last year, claiming four out of 10 mobile phone users, according to research firm eMarketer.

Normally adding 200 million users in 8 months to a product that already has a billion would reduce the average engagement, but most apps don't have Facebook Messenger's network effect. It grew just a bit slower, since last time it got from 800 million to 1 billion users in just six months. Yet even if Messenger doesn't start churning out cash, it's contributing massively to Facebook's success by locking people into its ecosystem. And it's driving revenue back on Facebook with News Feed ads that start a Messenger conversation with a product sales rep or bot when clicked.
