As it stated in Paris - Facebook says it has targeted 30 000 fake accounts linked to France ahead of the country's presidential election, as part of a worldwide effort against misinformation. Facebook and French media are also running fact-checking programs in France to combat misleading information, especially around the campaign for the two-round April 23-May 7 presidential election. Facebook ramped up its efforts against the spread of false news and misinformation on its service in December, a month after the US presidential election. Last week, it launched a resource to help users spot false news in 14 countries including the US, France and Germany. It said its efforts "enabled us to take action" against the French accounts and that it is removing sites with the highest traffic.

as declared in The purges were part of a Facebook resource to help stop the spread of fake news, hoaxes, and spam through fake accounts in 14 countries, including the U.S. and Germany. European authorities have also pressured other social media companies like Twitter to remove extremist propaganda and postings that violate European hate speech laws. AP and WiG reportsIn an effort to prevent faux news from influencing the presidential election in France, as it did in the United States, Facebook has purged 30,000 fake accounts tied to that country. "Fake accounts don't follow this pattern," the company said. Facebook also has introduced a new educational tool to help users spot fake news stories posted to the social networking site.

Facebook is deleting a bunch of spam accounts in its effort to fight fake news

Then on Friday, Facebook posted again about its efforts to fight spam accounts, this time in the form of automated Facebook "Likes" and comments generated by bots. Facebook has found another way to try and curb the spread of fake news: Hunting down and deleting spam accounts that aren't actual humans. Earlier this week, Facebook said that it had deleted 30,000 fake accounts in France, which, as Reuters points out, was well timed: France's presidential election is in about 10 days. "For example, our systems may detect repeated posting of the same content, or an increase in messages sent," Facebook wrote. "This effort complements other initiatives we have previously announced that are designed to reduce the distribution of misinformation, spam or false news on Facebook," the company wrote in a post Wednesday.
