Facebook ending program that paid users to install app to monitor their activity

Facebook is shutting down its Moments app

Facebook said on Thursday it was shuttering Moments, its standalone app for privately sharing photos with friends, in part because few people were using it. "We're ending support for the Moments app, which we originally launched as a place for people to save their photos," Rushabh Doshi, director of product management for Moments, said in a statement. "We know the photos people share are important to them so we will continue offering ways to save memories within the Facebook app." On Thursday, Facebook began informing users of the shutdown through email, as well as an alert on the Moments app. Next week, people who have used the Moments app within the last year will also get a notification when they open the main Facebook app.

furthermore TechCrunch reported Tuesday afternoon that Facebook had been paying users up to $20 per month to install a 'Facebook Research' app that gave the company the ability to monitor their phone and web activity. Facebook sources said the company would end the program with Apple "immediately," pre-empting likely action by Apple later Wednesday. "Despite early reports, there was nothing 'secret' about this; it was literally called the Facebook Research App," a spokesperson said in a statement. Facebook sources confirmed the program targeted users between the ages of 13 and 35. "Less than 5 percent of the people who chose to participate in this market research program were teens," the spokesperson said.
