Security News This Week: The Feds Can't Force Facebook to Wiretap Messenger

as informed in As a parting shot, though, Facebook announced a security breach that affected at least 50 million people—and possibly as many as 90 million. Security researchers at ESET caught Russian hackers using a clever technique called a UEFI rootkit, which not even swapping in a new hard drive will fix. Over the last several weeks, Facebook has been fighting the US government in court over whether it has to wiretap an alleged gang member's Messenger account. Gizmodo reporter Kashmir Hill confirmed this week that Facebook accesses "shadow contact information" to target ads at people. By using only this shadow data, Hill was able to target a single security researcher with an ad for his eyes only.

Facebook is rolling out a redesigned Messenger focused on simplicity

Facebook is releasing a redesigned version of Messenger today that attempts to put the focus back on your chats. Messenger was born as a simple way for Facebook users to send messages to one another while they browsed it on the desktop. James Patterson's next novel will be released on Facebook Messenger

Now, he's trying a new medium: Facebook Messenger. Tomorrow, Facebook will debut a "digital novel experience" based on his forthcoming book The Chef. Facebook has partnered with the author to adapt the novel for its Messenger platform. Beginning on October 30th, users can search for "The Chef" in the app, which will bring up the story. Facebook will also supplement the story with live Q&A sessions with Patterson, and it will launch Instagram profiles for the main characters.
